Highlands School had its annual school spelling bee for fifth through eighth grade on Thursday, Dec. 20. This year the spelling bee lasted 31 rounds. Fifth graders Ahad Bashir and Shawn Goyal competed against one another in rounds 24 through 31. Ahad correctly spelled the winning word "nonchalant" to win the title of champion of the Highlands School spelling bee. Shawn was the second place winner. Ahad went on to compete in the District Spelling Bee in Mountain Brook on Jan. 10 and made it to the fifth round, which was semi-final round.
