Frances Patrick leads the pack in the girls 1,600 meters at the Class 7A, Section 3 meet, held April 29 at Mountain Brook High School.
Two Mountain Brook High School track and field athletes will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, this weekend to compete at New Balance Nationals Outdoor. Held June 17-19 at North Carolina A&T University's Irwin Belk Track, the meet serves as the de facto national championship of high school track and field.
Below are the pair of Spartans who will be competing:
Frances Patrick: The Class of 2016 graduate and Texas Christian University signee will run in the championship division of the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase. She clocked a time of 7 minutes, 22.07 seconds at the Over the Mountain Challenge in March—her only other time running the event this season. At the Class 7A state meet in May, she captured the fifth individual state title of her career with a triumph in the 3,200 meters.
Brian Schmidt: The rising senior jumped 23 feet in the long jump at the 7A outdoor state meet to clinch a fifth-place finish. He also placed third in the state high jump with a leap of 6-4. In Greensboro, he will compete in the championship division of the long jump.
